OPTIONAL MUSIC FOR TEST EXAMINATIONS

Comprising four CD’s with accompanying sheet-music, this will be available at a cost of R1,000.00 from 1 April 2011.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Compiled by Jennifer Louw and played by Pieter van Zyl, this consists of, in the main, music composed by Kenneth Robertson who was commissioned in 1983 by Ms Faith de Villiers, then Chairperson of the Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa, to write music for the existing Grade Syllabi as well as supplementary music for the Test Examinations.

ABOUT THE PIANIST

Pieter van Zyl obtained his B.Mus. from the University of Stellenbosch, the M.Mus from U.P.E. and holds the Performer’s Licentiate from Unisa and the Royal Schools of Music. His teachers included Lamar Crowson, Danie Smit, Makkie Loubser, Nancy Hofmeyer, Betsie Cluver and Neil Solomon. He has given a number of recitals at St Martin-in-the-Field in London and in 2009 performed with the Orchestra of the Academy of St Andrews. Together with clarinettist Matthew Reid, Pieter was awarded the KANNA prize for best classical performance at the Klein Karoo Festival, 2009. He has also been musical director for three theatre productions presented by the Claremont Colleges (California) involving the first performances of music by the American composer Tom Flaherty. His first commercial CD was recently released in November this year.

Pieter balances his love for music with a passion for theatre. He trained in the Mime Corporel technique and philosophy of French theatre-master Etienne Decroux, performing for three years throughout UK and Europe in the theatre company, Theatre de l’Ange Fou. As musician and actor, Pieter has worked throughout South Africa as well as Zimbabwe, Britain, Belgium, France, Greece and California. He holds his Advanced 1 certificate in the Cecchetti Method.
